Team with trophy celebration

The Saints VALORANT team continues to make their mark and put Canada on the map with another major championship victory.

Despite being ranked as the #1 team in North America, the Saints VALORANT team entered the ESPORTSU Collegiate Esports Commisioners Cup (CECC) in Arlington, Texas as the #5 seed, but still a strong favourite to win the event.

The Saints quickly dispatched Saint Xavier University and Boise State University to move on to Day 2 and the single-elimination playoff bracket. The Saints continued their dominance with convincing wins over Converse University and Simon Fraser University to move onto Championship Sunday and the semi-finals.

Facing a tough test against Winthrop University, one of only two collegiate teams to defeat the Saints this year, the VALORANT team avenged last semester’s loss in a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory to propel the Saints to the Grand Finals against #1 seed Blinn College.

The Saints continued their momentum against Blinn on route to a 2-0 victory, marking the first time that a Canadian school has lifted the ESPORTSU Commissioners Cup.

“We had confidence in ourselves and each other,” said Tanner McGhee, who was named tournament MVP. “No one has the teamwork and chemistry that we do. All we had to do was to stay composed.”

The Saints Rocket League team also competed in the event where they finished in the Top 12. There they defeated San Jose State University and Davenport University before being eliminated by Maryville University.

The 2024 CECC event welcomed 320 teams, 185 schools, and 1,500 of North America’s top collegiate esports athletes to the Esports Stadium in Arlington, Texas, the largest turnkey esports facility in North America for the 3-day event.
