Graduates of this program are able to assist lawyers in private law offices and legal departments. Responsibilities of legal assistants may include drafting legal documents and correspondence, interviewing clients and witnesses, compiling evidence and documentation for trial, updating corporate minute books and filings, assisting lawyers in preparing and processing estate administration documents and attending to the closing of real estate and mortgage transactions. This program will appeal to students with a strong literacy and communications background. They must also have excellent interpersonal skills and are organized and flexible. Legal Office Administrators must have the ability to pay attention to detail and work under pressure. The desire to constantly learn is essential in order to keep up with changes in the law.
Training in establishing and maintaining data management systems to ensure organized electronic and paper records for the legal environment.
Emphasis on coordinating the organization, processing, and response to electronic and paper communications facilitating the flow of information.
Producing accurate financial records for the legal environment within a specified time frame by compiling information and using appropriate software.
Training on how to produce accurate legal correspondence by a specified deadline using available computer technology as well as applying recording, editing, and language skills.
Learn to troubleshoot and show initiative in the creation and production of accurate documentation for civil, corporate, real estate, family, and wills and estate law by a specified deadline using computer technology.
Graduates have the skills and flexibility to find opportunities in a variety of entry-level positions with law firms and in legal departments of corporations and government agencies. There are also openings in closely related fields including the courts, business/government offices and financial institutions. Positions include Legal Secretaries, Legal Assistants, Law Clerks, Mortgage Officers and Insurance Adjusters.
For programs with Experiential Learning (Work Placement/Internship): Costs for accommodation, if needed, travel and related expenses is at the student's own expense. It is recommended for most programs, that students have access to a laptop or desktop computer while away from home during experiential learning periods.
