Program Overview

This program focuses on the technical skills required to meet a variety of goals in the processing and installation of wood products. The student learns a wide range of skills including cabinet making, trim and construction carpentry, architectural millwork manufacturing and installation (cabinets, custom trim and stairs) and furniture making.

For programs with Experiential Learning (Work Placement/Internship): Costs for accommodation, if needed, travel and related expenses is at the student's own expense. Program Vocational Learning Outcomes

Manufacturing Technician- Wood Products (Ontario College Diploma) (MTCU Code 54300)

The successful completion of this program will enable the graduate to:

  1. Prepare and interpret drawings and specifications to construct various styles of furniture, cabinets and architectural millwork.
  2. Use AutoCAD and Kitchen Design software programs to draft, dimension, and plot complete working drawings according to the principles of computer control of woodworking manufacturing
  3. Determine the appropriate wood, materials and tools for the project type, budget andfinish.
  4. Adhere to health and safety guidelines following specific worksites as well as current legislation and regulations.
  5. Perform the mathematical calculations and measurements to solve technical woodworking problems and to prepare cost estimates for woodworkingprojects.
  6. Design and construct jigs and patterns to be used for safe machining and production applications.
  7. Design, construct, finish and restore cabinets and millwork components to be installed in residential and commercial settings.
  8. Perform procedures such as machining and sanding in preparation for the application of final finishes.
  9. Perform basic shop routines involving the safe setup, operation and maintenance of a wide range of machinery, power tools and equipment.
  10. Work collaboratively with customers, managers, and other tradespeople to complete construction projects within specified time allotments.
  11. Communicate information clearly and accurately using industry-specific terminology.
  12. Adhere to quality control processes designed to monitor inventory and the efficiency of manufacturing processes.
